In conjunction with Black History Month (February), the Gallipolis City School District will be recognizing the accomplishments of Robert Mitchell. Robert was a local humanitarian, activist, and influential figure in the promotion and implementation of integrated schools in Gallipolis. One hundred years ago, Mr. Mitchell led the way to an early desegregation of Gallia Academy High School. Because of his efforts, the Gallipolis City Schools became fully desegregated in 1951. Robert Mitchell is buried in the Pine Street Colored Cemetery on State Route 160.
